Introduction:

Did you know that lions are in the cat family? In this report you will learn about lions physical characteristics, habitat, food and predators.

Lions habitat:

Lions are most active at night and live in a variety of habitats but Lions prefer grasslands, savannah dense scrub and open woodlands. Historically they ranged across much of Europe, Asia and Africa but now they are mainly in parts of Africa south of the Sahara. There are some lions in North America and they live in the hot savannah because there is a lot of prey there.

Lions Predators:

No predators hunt lions and eat them However they have a few natural enemies, such as hyenas and cheetahs. Hyenas compete with lions for food and often steal their kills. Humans are another major threat to the wild lion population. People frequently kill lions to protect their livestock,which reduces population.

Lions physical characteristics:

Lions have strong, compact bodies and powerful forelegs,teeth and jaws for pulling down prey and killing them. They have long sharp claws. Their coats are yellow-gold and adult males have shaggy manes and different colours. The range of the manes are golden,yellow,reddish brown,black and blond. The length and colour of a lions mane is likely determined by age,hormones and genetics.

What lions eat:

Lions are carnivores which means they are animals that only eat meat. Some of the types of prey they catch,birds,hares,turtles,mice,lizards,wild hogs,wild dogs,antelopes,cheetahs,buffaloes,leopards,crocodiles,baby elephants,rhinos, hippopotamus  and even tall giraffes!
